Description:

            This is a study of major counseling and pastoral care problems confronting the minister, pastoral counselor and clinical chaplain and appropriate Biblical material to utilize with Christian/patients/clients.

 

Rationale:

            This practical course explores the use of the Bible in ministry contexts as it relates to needs commonly presented by church members/patients/clients of today’s society. The course content is designed for those ministering in congregations, Christian counseling centers, hospitals, and hospice settings.

 

Objectives:

A student that successfully completes this course will be able to:

A.        Demonstrate an awareness of the role of the Bible in ministry within pastoral care contexts as it relates to commonly presented issues.

B.        Demonstrates a defined, thoughtful methodology of discerning what the Bible says about a variety of issues.

C.        Demonstrates that he/she understands and knows how to apply concepts in the utilization of the Bible as a resource in pastoral care settings.

 

Methods and Procedures:

            The format of the delivery of course-information in this course is primarily communication through E-mail letters and phone calls between students and instructor.

 

Guidelines for Course Work:

1.                  It is your responsibility to read/study all materials and to make sure your instructor receives your homework by the due date of each assignment.

2.                  Guidelines on Submission of Assignments, Late/Missed Work, and Final Exam:

a.       Online submission of written assignments is through Word Document attachments in e-mails. If you cannot figure out how to send Word Document attachments through e-mail, it will still be your responsibility to send the assignments through U.S. Postal Service, U.P.S. or FedEx.

b.      Written assignments, including the exams, will be accepted late. Please understand that there will be a 10% per day penalty on all late work.

 

Book Reports:

There will be four books to read and three to type up reports on. Graduate students type 10 to 12 pages (double-spaced) book reports. Your font size should be twelve, using Times New Roman or Courier New.

 

*Please make sure that you use a well known writing style format, like Turabian (at the end of this syllabus is a handout from the Internet that explains Turabian) or the APA writing style (http://www.apasty.org) .  *** Due dates for each report will be placed by the names of each book. These reports are not to be summaries of the books. The following questions will serve as a general guideline for the papers:

1.                  What do you perceive as the strengths of the book?

2.                  What do you perceive as the weaknesses of the book?

3.                  What is the most important question or issue that this book raises related to your own current and/or future practice?

4.                  What is worth remembering? Be specific.

5.                  What is worth pursuing or applying? Be specific.

6.                  What is worth questioning? Be specific.

7.                  What did the book contribute to your understanding of pastoral care and/or Christian counseling?

8.                  Did the text integrate Scripture effectively? Explain by citing specific examples.

4.                  Cloud, H. & Townsend, J. (2001). How people grow: What the Bible reveals about personal growth. Grand Rapids: Zondervan. Finish reading this book by the end of the semester.

 

Exams: There will a Mid-Term and Final Exam. The material covered in the exams will come from the lessons I send to you as attachments through your e-mail accounts. Make sure I have your e-mail address accurately.

 

Preface Note on Grading: I designed this course in a way that enables every student to pass, if he/she completes his/her work. I picture every student earning an A or B. My expectation for each of you is to try your best by demonstrating an overall understanding of the material and how it applies in your specific ministry context. Grade Scale:

                        A = 93 – 100

 

                        B = 85 – 92

 

                        C = 77 – 84

 

                        D = 70 – 76

 

                        F = 69 and below

            We will evaluate the material I send you from a Judeo-Christian perspective.
