Description of Course

A study of the historical, theological, political and literary elements in the Book of Revelation with investigation into the various theories developed to express the meaning and message of the Book of Revelation. The student will critique each theory as it relates to the historical, theological, political, and literary elements on which each theory is founded. The student will develop and defend his/her own understanding of the Book of Revelation

 

Course Learning Objectives (In general terms, what the student should know at the end of the course)

 

Understand the basic structure and unfolding of the imagery and historical content of the Book of Revelation;

 

Understand the nature and purpose of apocalyptic literary genre;

 

Understand the theology of the Book of Revelation both from the student’s own point of view as well as traditional doctrinal statements of the Book’s theology;

 

Understand the place of the Book of Revelation among other books of the Old Testament and New Testament and in the Christian pilgrimage through the centuries.

Internet Resources (research on topics available from internet resources is recommended)

 

The student will complete 3 internet research projects. The topics of the research projects will be suggested by the student and approved by the professor. The student will complete each project in a 30 day sequence.

 

Course Assignments (specific activities the student must do to complete the course and accomplish the course objectives)

 

The student will read each textbook in the order in which they are listed above.

 

The student will complete a University book review form for each textbook;

 

The student will complete and be prepared to discuss assigned content related questions following the completion of each textbook.

 

The student will complete 3 internet research projects;

 

The student will complete a mid term examination and a final examination
