Description of Course

The study of the theological doctrines of the New Testament.  Discussion of the historical, cultural, and theological background to the study of the doctrines of the New Testament. The unique message of Jesus and the subsequent elaboration of His message by the writers of the New Testament in the development of Christology, its meaning, and expression in His church.

 

 

Course Learning Objectives (In general terms, what the student should know at the end of the course)

 

Understand the influences conditioning and preparing the ancient world and the Jews in particular for the coming of the Messiah;

 

Understand the doctrines of Jesus and the apostles in both their specificity and range;

 

Understand the theological influence of the doctrines of Jesus and the apostles in their time and subsequent history;

 

Understand the place of His church as the bearer and custodian of Christ’s message and redemption.

Edward C. Wharton, The Church of Christ: The Distinctive Nature of the New Testament Church

 

Internet Resources (research on topics available from internet resources is recommended)

 

The student will select 3 major theological doctrines for research on the internet. The student will prepare one research paper each month for three months.

 

Course Assignments (specific activities the student must do to complete the course and accomplish the course objectives)

 

The student will read each textbook in the order in which they are listed above.

 

The student will complete a University book review form for each textbook;

 

The student will complete and be prepared to discuss assigned content related questions following the completion of each textbook.

 

The student will complete 3 internet research projects;

 

The student will complete a mid term examination and a final examination

 

Course Grade based on reading, assignments, reports, and tests
